    About the data

    Each region page shows four views: population by 5-year age group with year-on-year change, population by sex, one-person households by single year of age, and how each single year of age has changed over the last five years. Choose a province and its cities and counties are drawn alongside it; choose a city and you get its neighbourhoods.

    The figures come from the Resident Registration statistics published each month by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. They count Korean nationals registered at an address, so they are a de jure count of residents rather than a census estimate, and foreign residents are not included. Because the data are public and the population structure is the starting point of any survey design, we share them as they are, updated at the beginning of each month.

    Korea has three tiers of local administration. The suffix on each name tells you the tier:

    -do · -si (province level)
    Provinces (do) and the largest cities that rank as provinces (Seoul, Busan, Sejong…)
    -si · -gun · -gu
    Cities, counties and urban districts. Large cities are further divided into non-autonomous gu.
    -eup · -myeon · -dong
    Towns, rural townships and urban neighbourhoods, the smallest units shown here.
